Photography in the digital age is no longer limited to capturing a single moment. It exists within a technological ecosystem where filters, vertical formats, drones and hybrid images are reshaping how we observe and narrate our world. Between the instantaneity of social media and the necessity of digital archiving, our relationship with images is evolving profoundly. Tools are becoming more accessible, practices are shifting, and creativity now appears within everyone’s reach. But what do these new visual languages truly reveal about our time?

Photography in the digital age: a shift in visual language

Photography has always evolved alongside technology. From the transition from film to digital in the early 2000s, recent history has already experienced a major transformation. Today, however, photography in the digital age is crossing a new threshold: it has become instantaneous, interactive and multidimensional.

The arrival of the smartphone as the primary camera has profoundly reshaped usage. According to a study by ARCEP (Autorité de régulation des communications électroniques) published in 2023, more than 90% of French people own a smartphone, which has become the main tool for capturing everyday visual moments. This accessibility turns every user into a potential image creator.

The vertical format, long marginal in traditional photography, has established itself under the influence of social networks such as Instagram and TikTok. These platforms prioritise immersion, favouring framing that is closer to the body and the face — we are IN the lived moment. Framing standards now evolve according to how images are distributed. They are no longer constrained by the limitations present at the moment of capture. The technological performance of devices and smartphones, their flexibility and ease of handling, have effectively removed many of these constraints.

Visual storytelling is accelerating. Images are designed to be viewed quickly, understood immediately and shared straight away. The aesthetic of the feed is gradually replacing that of contemplation… we spend less time looking at each image individually and instead absorb the atmosphere of a stream of photos passing before our eyes. This is where filters come into play.

Photo filters: aesthetic expression in a single click

Photo filters undoubtedly embody the most visible transformation of contemporary photography. In just a few seconds, they allow users to apply colour corrections, lighting atmospheres or stylistic effects that were once reserved for professionals mastering complex software.

This technical simplification democratises creation. It opens the door to a more intuitive form of visual expression. Users test, adjust and publish. Editing becomes a natural gesture, almost instinctive.

However, this aesthetic standardisation also raises questions. When millions of images adopt similar tones, does individuality begin to fade? Researchers in information sciences speak of a form of “visual standardisation” linked to popularity algorithms, which favour certain renderings over others.

When significant effort was required to achieve a particular effect, applying that effect was more a semantic choice than a purely aesthetic one. It was about giving specific meaning to an image. Today, applying a filter most often serves to correct imperfections or enhance a scene (another way of saying we attempt to align our photo with current aesthetic standards before sharing it) rather than to convey a deeper message.

Drones and new perspectives: elevating the gaze

Another revolution in photography in the digital age is the democratisation of drones. Once reserved for cinematic productions, aerial views are now accessible to the general public.

Manufacturers such as DJI have helped popularise these compact, stabilised devices. In France, regulations strictly govern their use, yet their presence in both amateur and professional creation continues to grow.

Drones modify storytelling. They introduce an elevated, cartographic, almost omniscient point of view. Landscapes become graphic; cities appear geometric.

Photography becomes spectacular, and this height transforms our perception of territory. We look differently at places we thought we knew. Technological innovation enriches our reality by shifting our perspective — quite literally.

Hybrid images: when the boundary between photo and video fades

Photography in the digital age is also characterised by the emergence of hybrid images. Cinemagraphs, Live Photos, animated stories: the boundary between photography and video is becoming increasingly porous.

Recent devices now capture sequences before and after the shutter is pressed. Platforms favour short, animated content. The result? An image that breathes, blinks, moves subtly.

This hybridisation transforms our relationship with time. Photography, historically associated with the frozen moment, now integrates duration. It becomes a narrative fragment rather than a simple trace.

Conversely, videos are becoming shorter, storytelling more condensed. We tell a moment rather than a story. The narrative is built around a collection of very short sequences — like individual snapshots that stand alone but, when brought together, form a single, large image of one and the same scene.

This evolution fits into a broader logic of an integrated digital ecosystem where capture, editing and distribution are interconnected. One final piece is still missing from this system: preservation and archiving. We will return to this shortly.

Is creativity for everyone a myth or a reality?

The accessibility of tools suggests a democratisation of creativity. The performance of smartphones and the intuitive nature of applications have led to an explosion in image production.

According to the Digital Barometer, 2023 edition, a majority of young adults regularly publish visual content online. Image production is becoming an everyday language.

However, accessibility does not automatically mean mastery. Creativity still depends on vision, composition, light and meaning. Technology facilitates expression, but it does not replace intention.

What it does do is expand possibilities. It enables more people to experiment, learn and share. According to the study “Pratiques culturelles des Français” published by the DEPS (Ministry of Culture) in 2018, the production and sharing of digital visual content have become widely democratised over the past fifteen years, particularly among younger generations. Image creation has thus become a common mode of expression, integrated into everyday practices.

Photography is gradually ceasing to be reserved for a technical and/or financial elite.

Because the device used to take photographs is the same one used to edit them before publishing them on social networks. Because thousands of photos can be taken at virtually zero cost, and there is no longer any need to invest astronomical sums in a computer and complex software to correct and transform them. Because it is no longer necessary to spend hours training and tinkering in order to achieve satisfying results. Yes, both photography and video have become widely democratised. The question may then be asked: has the image lost some of its power and value? Not necessarily — but for that to remain true, we must value it so that it does not fade into the digital haze of our hard drives.

Between instantaneity and digital archiving: what will remain?

One of the major paradoxes of photography in the digital age lies in the tension between flow and preservation.

On one hand, images are published in real time on social networks. With stories that disappear after 24 hours and content quickly pushed aside and replaced, the image becomes ephemeral and seems destined to vanish.

On the other hand, the issue of digital archiving becomes central. How can we sustainably preserve these thousands of photographs? How can we guarantee their integrity, security and longevity?

Data management experts remind us that local storage on a smartphone remains fragile. Breakdowns, losses, cyberattacks or changes in services can lead to permanent disappearance.

Long-term preservation requires a structured strategy based on regular backups within secure storage that offers both organisational tools and genuine respect for privacy. As image production explodes, its management becomes as much a cultural issue as a technical one.

Photography is not merely an artistic or social practice; it represents a form of personal and family heritage. In a constantly evolving digital environment, preserving one’s memories requires foresight and rigour.

Shall we sum it up?

In summary, photography in the digital age is profoundly redefining how we see, create and transmit. The tools and possibilities are numerous — photo filters, drones, artificial intelligence and social networks. They are shaping new forms of “visual writing”, perfectly suited to contemporary speed.

Naturally, creativity is more accessible than ever, but it still depends on vision and intention. As for instantaneity, it coexists with a growing need for structured and secure digital archiving. Structured and secure archiving… that is probably the challenge now facing us in light of the sheer volume of images we create.

Between constant flow and lasting memory, photography continues to evolve. Its tools, formats and rhythms may change, but one constant remains: telling the story of our time, image after image.

Joomeo:

Hello Mathieu! We recently discovered your underwater photos and asked you to introduce us to this specialty, which is as poetic as it is technical. Could you tell us a little about yourself?

Mathieu Cornillon:

To put it simply, I am a 35-year-old photographer and diver from Toulouse. I work in a profession that has nothing to do with either of these two passions that occupy most of my free time!

See the full series of photos in the slideshow at the end of the article

Joomeo:

When looking at your images, one feels that seeing such beauty naturally inspires photography. Did diving lead you to photography, or was it the other way around?

Mathieu Cornillon:

In the end, neither! These two passions, diving and photography, came to me around the same time, nearly 14 years ago. However, it took me about five years of practice in each discipline before I said: “Perhaps it’s time to try combining the two!” 😉

Five years of separate practice were certainly not too much! It is really necessary to master each specialty properly before linking them. There are simply too many parameters to manage simultaneously in both photography and diving to learn them together.

Joomeo:

Indeed, both worlds demand a certain technical skill… Could you describe the challenges you face when photographing the marine world?

Mathieu Cornillon:

The first difficulty, in my opinion, is purely practical and relates to diving: you must know how to manage your balance perfectly! You need to be as stable as possible in the water to avoid motion blur and, at the same time, not crush the seabed or rocks by using them for support. If you are not careful, you risk simply destroying the small inhabitants living there.

Once this is under control, it is necessary to focus on breathing. The goal is to avoid making too many bubbles that could scare the fish away!

See the full series of photos in the slideshow at the end of the article

The artistic aspect comes second. You start with simple photos: if the fish is already sharp and well-framed, that’s an achievement! Then, with experience, adding one or more external flashes to the camera, you begin to work on artistic composition and the highlighting of the subject and various planes.

Remember, the camera is housed in a waterproof case, and we have a mask over our eyes, which makes previewing photos through the viewfinder not very practical! Many photos are taken by guesswork, with all the uncertainties that implies. Digital photography has brought great flexibility because taking a large number of photos is inexpensive! That was not the case before, and it greatly facilitates learning.

Joomeo:

Speaking of equipment, what are your recommendations?

Mathieu Cornillon:

To start, in 2006 I bought a second-hand expert compact camera with its housing, an Olympus C8080 with 8 MPixels. It allowed me to begin quickly and access the manual settings needed for personalised shots. Beyond the lens quality, in my opinion, it is better to have an “expert” camera to access the basic modes (A, S, M) of the camera.

I never use auto mode or underwater mode. I prefer to retain control and know what the camera is doing, choosing aperture or shutter priority, or simply using manual mode.

A little later, I acquired an external flash, which allowed me to improve my compositions and lighting. I considerably enhanced the quality of my photos thanks to this investment… and countless trials to master it!

What is your favourite memory in practising this art?

Mathieu Cornillon:

You wouldn’t suspect it, but marine flora and fauna range from very large to very, very, very small. Ultimately, it is often the very, very, very small that is the most spectacular in terms of shapes and colours!

I loved diving among Mobula and Manta rays, of course! Especially since I experienced this in the Azores, where these animals span 3 to 4 metres. Nevertheless, I still enjoy diving close to home in the Mediterranean. I don’t know… the geometric, almost fractal, details of jellyfish, starfish, or sea urchins speak to me.

Several times, I have even discovered, later on my computer screen, magnificent microscopic animals! That is, I had captured them unintentionally while photographing a normal-sized fish or crustacean nearby! A delightful way to relive dives once back home in Toulouse.

Joomeo:

What advice would you give a beginner wishing to get started in this field?

Mathieu Cornillon:

My main advice: as soon as you feel comfortable with your buoyancy in the water and your diving management, GO FOR IT! Especially as very good results can be achieved with compact or expert cameras.

Do not forget to photograph the tiny details! Macro photography while diving is very rewarding, as it quickly produces beautiful and satisfying results!

I hope this article will inspire divers to take up photography… and photographers to try diving!

Joomeo:

We have no doubt, Mathieu! And if anyone still needs convincing, the slideshow you prepared should do the trick perfectly! It’s time to let the photos speak now…

Joomeo :

Hello Arnaud. Tell us a little about yourself! How did you come to photography?

Arnaud Bertrande :

I am above all a traveller and a self-taught photographer from the Aquitaine region. First of all, I would describe myself as someone curious, attentive, alert and learning by tracing my own path.

My passion for photography came to me quite late, around 2007. I knew I had something to express but I couldn’t find through which medium. One day, I had a revelation: digital photography turned out to be a quick, accessible means of expression.

I do not speak much, but I realised that I could speak through images. What I felt through scents, sensations and emotions, my eye perceived and could capture.

See the full series of photos in the slideshow at the end of the article

Joomeo :

What motivates you in your photography practice?

Arnaud Bertrande :

I am above all seeking to push the limits of the imagination, to stage my dreams and my emotions. That is in fact the beauty of digital photography: to broaden and enrich the possibilities of expression, opening up additional horizons of creation.

I am always in search of images that will transport me and take the viewer by the hand to lead them into my stories.

Joomeo :

You have a speciality, and for you photography is not necessarily about snapshots or freezing a moment in time. Tell us a little more…

Arnaud Bertrande :

I mainly practise the technique of long exposure. This technique perfectly matches my imagination and allows me to escape reality. I like my camera to take me on a journey to explore and interpret the environment. In fact, it is a way of stepping over reality to move into another world.

Long exposure requires equipment, a little technique, and a lot of patience…

Arnaud Bertrande

It is a technique that may intimidate some people but is fascinating for its visual effect. Long exposure requires equipment, a little technique, and a lot of patience…

As with any photo, I think you must first find your subject. The one that “speaks to you”, that manages to stir something different in you, that makes you want to go beyond what you see at first glance. That kind of subject which can then give way to imagination to better express what you feel.

It is not compulsory if you want a “classic” photo, but if you want to create something deeper and more personal then you need to be able to feel and to let your mind wander.

See the full series of photos in the slideshow at the end of the article

Joomeo :

What advice would you give to guide a beginner who wants to get started with long exposure?

Arnaud Bertrande :

If you want to take your first steps with this technique, it is important to understand that you can practise it by day or by night. The difference is that for daytime photography you will need certain equipment.

Put simply, long exposure means extending the exposure time of a photo by adjusting the aperture and shutter speed.

Arnaud Bertrande

By leaving the sensor exposed to light for several seconds or minutes, the camera will record everything that moves and create a sense of motion. In general, this technique is used for water, starry skies, or urban scenes with car light trails. But in fact, you can use it however you wish. You just need a creative idea!

See the full series of photos in the slideshow at the end of the article

To offset the intensity of the light entering the camera for several seconds in broad daylight, you will need to use neutral density filters. These filters can be square or circular. They may be entirely opaque or graduated. Beyond the filters, you will also need a tripod to avoid camera shake and blurring of the entire image. For exposures longer than 30 seconds, you will also need a remote control.

The shot must be taken in manual mode and you will need to play with the aperture and shutter speed.
There are smartphone apps and charts available to help you calculate exposure times depending on the filters and aperture you use.

Joomeo :

Very pragmatic advice for approaching a technique that allows you to create highly dreamlike images! It is clear that you developed your art through a very empirical approach.

Arnaud Bertrande :

At the beginning you fumble, but with experience you gradually master this technique and go further in exploring its possibilities.

The technique of long exposure allows you to reveal hidden aspects of landscapes and to further emphasise their darker side.
That is what I wanted to convey in my series “Mystery”.

I played with strong contrasts that plunge us into a mysterious, sometimes unsettling world.

Arnaud Bertrande

It is a black and white series on the theme of landscapes.
I played with strong contrasts that plunge us into a mysterious, sometimes unsettling world.

From imagining being near a haunted castle to a raging sea, it is but a step… you can almost touch the magic of childhood tales and legends.

I like to think that the landscapes I discover have a touch of mystery and a darker side!

Joomeo :

It is hard to say whether the landscapes you captured really have these characteristics in reality, but your photos certainly give them those qualities!
Proof of this can be found in the slideshow you created for us.

Thank you Arnaud for this wonderful exchange and see you soon.

The initiative follows an awareness campaign that has gained a lot of traction in recent weeks. A post encourages mothers to upload three photos of their little ones. They must also nominate ten other mothers who will have to do the same.

The problem with chain posts

“If you are proud of your children, post 3 photos and nominate 10 of your friends to do the same!”

An invitation that almost sounds like a threat. Indeed, it makes the person who receives the message feel guilty. The one who does not go along with the ritual is not proud of her children, she does not love them… therefore she is a bad mother. Difficult then to break the chain! Especially since the act seems quite harmless at first glance.

Yes but… yes but posting pictures of your offspring is not as trivial as it might seem. Some consequences can be rather unfortunate.

“we remind you that posting photos of your children on Facebook is not without risk!”

The Gendarmerie Nationale

Beyond the significant risk linked to sexual delinquency, openly exposing your children on social media can have an impact on their reputation. By giving in to this temptation, we are therefore compromising their digital future.

In a few years’ time, some children, once grown up, may consider that their parents violated their privacy. And let’s admit it, they would be right! Through these posts made without their explicit consent, we may harm their reputation. The risk? Up to 1 year in prison and €45,000 in fines in the most serious cases… Rather dissuasive, isn’t it?

Protect your children from overexposure on social media

As parents, we must take responsibility and set an example

But that is not the most important point. In a world where the bullying of some children by their peers is largely facilitated by social media, the role of parents is also to protect the image of their little ones.

Yet they are often the first to post, in a very innocent way, the “embarrassing photos” that will brighten up their different profiles. Ill-intentioned people will find there, served on a platter, all the subjects of mockery and destabilisation useful and necessary for their misdeeds.

This is of course not about forbidding ourselves to share photos and videos of our good times with family or friends who may be far away. The idea is to know how to use the right tools to protect our privacy and that of our children.
Private sharing is probably the best way at present to meet both our desire to share and our need for confidentiality.

What Joomeo.com offers in this area is among the most effective and advanced solutions. Our sharing options, rights management on each album, protecting your shares by identifying your contacts… so many features that make Joomeo an ideal platform to preserve your privacy.

With the arrival of brighter days, the need to clear out and start afresh becomes stronger. “Spring cleaning” is a tradition rooted in many cultures, symbolising a fresh start after winter. This practice not only helps tidy up your living space but also frees your mind. According to psychiatrist Christine Barois, “spring symbolises the start of a new cycle,” which explains this desire for renewal in our homes.

The benefits of cleaning for your mood

Cleaning is not just a chore—it’s also an activity with multiple benefits (yes, it’s scientifically proven!). A study shows that 20 minutes of cleaning a day can reduce stress levels by 20%. What’s more, tidying up and sorting your belongings provides a genuine sense of satisfaction. You regain control of your environment, which in turn supports better mental health.

Refreshing your decor to feel better at home

Beyond cleaning, rethinking your home decor can have a significant impact on wellbeing. According to a UNIFA study, 52% of French people believe that interior design is essential to their sense of wellbeing. Changing furniture layout, adding decorative touches, or including personal memories such as photos can help create a calming and personal environment.

Surrounding yourself with photos of your most treasured memories has a real positive impact on your mood.

Indeed, looking at familiar images sparks a pleasant form of nostalgia that reduces stress and calms the mind.
As a result, it helps regulate emotions and creates a lasting sense of wellbeing.

Today, social media is part of our daily lives. Many parents share life moments with their children online. Yet, this habit is not without danger.

The practice of sharenting – posting photos and information about your children online – brings several concerns. Security, privacy, and psychological consequences: the risks are real. Let’s explore why you should avoid posting photos of your children on social media.

What is sharenting?

Sharenting is a portmanteau of “share” and “parenting.” It refers to the trend of parents sharing photos, videos, and information about their children on social media.

This practice is very common. According to a study by the University of Michigan, more than 50% of parents regularly post photos of their children online. However, few are aware of the long-term consequences: 27% have shared photos considered inappropriate.

A breach of the child’s privacy

Every post contributes to creating a digital footprint. Yet, a child cannot give informed consent.

According to a report by the Children’s Commissioner for England, a child will have an average of 1,300 photos of themselves published online before the age of 13. This early exposure can cause issues later in life, particularly in professional or social contexts.

💡 Our tip: Before posting a photo, ask yourself whether your child would be comfortable with it as an adult.

Risks of identity theft

Personal information often accompanies children’s photos (sometimes unintentionally). A first name, a location, or a school uniform can be enough for a malicious person to collect data.

A study by Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that by 2030, two-thirds of identity theft cases will involve minors whose data was exposed by their own parents.

💡 Our tip: Avoid posting identifiable information about your child.

Images misused for malicious purposes

Even innocent photos can be exploited. In 2022, an Interpol investigation revealed that 50% of images found on child exploitation sites originated from photos posted by parents themselves.

Even with a private account, it’s easy for someone to capture and share an image elsewhere. A simple screenshot is enough.

💡 Our tip: Think carefully before posting a photo and limit visibility to a trusted circle. Joomeo makes this easy! 😉

Psychological consequences for children

As they grow, some children discover photos of themselves online with embarrassment. They may face teasing at school or feel betrayed by their parents.

A study by Microsoft Research found that 42% of teenagers feel embarrassed or angry when they see images of themselves posted without consent.

💡 Our tip: Always ask your child’s opinion before posting a photo, especially if they are old enough to understand.

Legislation is evolving

In France, image rights protect minors. A child can take legal action against their parents for violations of their privacy.

In 2023, a bill was introduced in the National Assembly to protect children against sharenting. Some countries, such as Germany, already enforce strict rules to safeguard minors.

💡 Our tip: Respect your child’s rights and think carefully before posting a photo.

How to protect your children online

To avoid the risks of sharenting, follow these best practices:

Limit posting: Share only with trusted family and friends.

Use private sharing: Cloud solutions like Joomeo let you share images while controlling who sees them.

Blur faces: Use tools to mask your child’s identity.

Check privacy settings: Restrict access to posts.

Avoid sharing personal information: Don’t disclose names, locations, or schools.

Ask your child’s opinion: Involve them once they’re old enough to understand.

Key takeaway

Sharenting is common but risky. Posting photos of your children can compromise their privacy, safety, and future wellbeing.

Before sharing an image, take a moment to reflect. Would your child be happy to see this photo online in 10 years? Be cautious! Protect the younger generation in a hyperconnected world.
